After a case is docketed and assigned a number, parties submit written briefs and other relevant materials from the lower courts. A randomly selected three-judge panel reviews the case, which may include oral arguments (typically fifteen minutes per side). The presiding judge assigns a panel member to write the court’s opinion, explaining the decision and its rationale. If the court deems oral argument unnecessary, the case is decided based on the briefs. While Federal Circuit decisions can be appealed to the Supreme Court, they are typically the final ruling.
